Why does the file size change after conversion

The same resolution does not mean the same size in megabytes. The weight is affected by the format, the contents of the image, and the save options.

01

Pixels and megabytes are different sizes

A 4000x 3000 image contains 12 million pixels. Megabytes show the size of the encoded file. Two images of the same resolution can occupy a different place: a flat sky and fine foliage give different data for the encoder.

02

Why is there more PNG after JPG

In our converter, PNG is saved without additional lossy compression. This does not restore the details already lost in the original JPG, but it can increase the weight. If you need a small file to send a photo, compare JPG and WebP.

03

Why does HEIC turn into a big JPG

A format change means a new encoding. The output JPG does not have to be smaller than the original HEIC. Here JPG is saved with 92% quality, and the original dimensions of ordinary photos are saved within acceptable limits.

04

How to compare options

Download the original, save the JPG, then repeat with WebP. Compare the size in the queue and open the downloaded results at the same scale. Look at the text, small details and borders of objects. The smallest file is not always suitable for your task.

05

Is it possible to get exactly 200 KB

In the current version, there is no setting of the exact weight, the quality slider, or reducing the width and height. If the service requires a hard limit in kilobytes, the conversion may not be sufficient. Do not repeat multiple JPG saves in the hope of being guaranteed to get to the right size.
